History of Major Missions

Below is a list of some of the Major Activations State Defense Forces have participated since 1917.

*The list will evolve over time as there have been many operations and activations State Defense Forces have performed.  We will be continuously adding content.  State Defense Forces have been in existence since 1917 there have been many activations and operations in its history.

 

2012 – Hurricane Sandy

State Defense Forces involved:

  • New York Guard – Mission: Assisted & Augmented The National Guard
  • Maryland State Defense Force – Mission: Assisted & Augmented The National Guard with Medical, & JOC Personnel
  • Georgia State Defense Force – Mission: Assisting The National Guard
  • South Carolina State Guard – Mission: Assisting The National Guard & Civil Authorities

2011 – Hurricane Irene

State Defense Forces involved:

  • New York Guard – Mission: Augment National Guard Forces with Force Protection, Medical, Supply & Logistics
  • Virginia State Defense Force – Mission: Augment National Guard Forces with IMAT (Communication) Teams
  • Maryland State Defense Force – Mission: Assist National Guard Forces with Engineering, Medical & JOC Personnel

2005 – Hurricane Katrina

State Defense Forces involved:

  • Alabama State Defense Force – Mission: Assist The National Guard with Logistics & Supply
  • Georgia State Defense Force – Mission: Augment & Assist The National Guard with Medical Teams
  • Texas State Guard – Mission: Augment & Assist The National Guard in Medical, Transportation, Shelter Management, & Supply missions
  • Louisiana State Guard – Mission: Assist The National Guard
  • California State Military Reserve – Mission: Assist The National Guard

2004 – Republican National Convention

State Defense Forces involved:

  • New York Guard

Mission involved: Augment The New York National Guard CERFP Team

 

2001 – September 11 Terrorist Attacks

  • 2,274 Soldiers from 8 State Defense Forces were involved with responding to The September 11 Terrorist Attacks.

Missions involved: Medical Assistance, Assistance with Recovery Efforts, Back-filling Deployed State National Guard units, Force Protection Teams securing critical sites & National Guard Armories, & Logistical Support

 

1946-2001

  • State Defense Forces Assisted & Augmented National Guard forces during Natural Disasters

World War 2

  • 168,000 Soldiers from nearly every State were involved with securing critical sites, armories and performing State & Federal Military Missions.  They also responded to natural disasters & riot control that occurred during the war.

World War 1

  • 150,000 Soldiers from numerous States were involved with Internal Security missions, securing critical sites, armories, and assuming National Guard responsibilities through the states
