A Message from the Commander of the Texas State Guard:
Memorial Day Message from Our Commander:Texas State Guard,On Monday, May 31, 2021, Americans across our great country will celebrate the brave servicemen and servicewomen who died defending our nation. All too often, many people forget the significance of Memorial Day and succumb to the commercialization of clothing, automobiles, and mattress sales. Those of us who serve or have served in uniform have a particular duty to keep Memorial Day in proper perspective.Whether you celebrate by hosting a backyard BBQ get-together, gathering with fellow veterans or having a simple and intimate moment of silence with your loved ones, Memorial Day is a special time to honor America’s history and commemorate the bravery, courage, and honor of our troops. We should give reflection to those individuals who so bravely and instinctually risked life and limb in the face of grave danger. The Greek philosopher Thucydides once said, “The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it.The service members we honor on Memorial Day came from all walks of life, but they shared several fundamental qualities. They possessed courage, pride, determination, selflessness, dedication to duty, loyalty and integrity – all the qualities needed to serve a cause greater than oneself. This is commendable in a nation where so few among our citizens have donned the uniform and accepted the inherent risks of military service and war. This alone, makes them heroes worthy of remembrance.Calvin Coolidge once said, “No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.” Emily Potter said, “Heroes never die, they live on forever in the hearts and minds of those who would follow in their footsteps.”During this Memorial Day keep the fallen in your minds and keep their families and friends in your heart – for it is their immense collective sacrifices that have helped keep our country safe and free.Have a safe and blessed Memorial Day and God Bless the Texas State Guard.ORIGINALLY SIGNED: ROBERT J. BODISCH, SR., MG, TXSG, Commanding General
