In 1777, The British Army led by General John Burgoyne invaded New York from Canada. The British plan was to crush The Northern Continental Army led by General Horatio Gates and take control of The Hudson, which would split American in two. The two armies met near Saratoga Springs where The American Army surrounded and defeated The British. Following this surrender France agreed to join The American War for Independence.
