BOARD LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Position: Working Director – Board of Directors
Organization: The State Guard & Defense Force Council
Primary Platform: StateDefenseForce.com
Work Type: Remote – United States
Position Type: Volunteer Board Leadership / Working Director
Travel: Limited – Legislative engagement
THE OPPORTUNITY
The State Guard & Defense Force Council is seeking experienced, mission-driven leaders to join its Board of Directors.
This is not an honorary Board position.
We are seeking Directors who are willing to actively participate in building, managing, funding, and expanding the organization and who are prepared to assume responsibility for a defined area of organizational operations.
The State Guard & Defense Force Council operates StateDefenseForce.com and a growing group of affiliated initiatives focused on State Defense Force news and public information, historical preservation, education, legislative advocacy, recruitment awareness, member support, and organizational development.
StateDefenseForce.com has developed into the most prominent online information resources dedicated exclusively to State Defense Forces / State Guard in the United States. With that growth comes a responsibility to maintain accurate information, expand our programs, strengthen our financial foundation, and develop a professional leadership structure capable of supporting the organization for decades to come.
We are therefore seeking working Directors, not individuals interested solely in attending periodic Board meetings or holding a title.
BOARD VOTING & DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY
Each Director serves as a voting member of the Board of Directors of The State Guard & Defense Force Council and will have a voice in determining the strategic direction, policies, programs, and major initiatives of the organization.
Subject to the Council’s Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, Conflict-of-Interest Policy, and applicable law, Directors will vote on significant organizational matters including:
• Organizational strategy and long-term priorities
• Establishment, expansion, restructuring, or termination of major programs and initiatives
• Legislative advocacy priorities and major policy positions undertaken by the Council
• Significant Office of Government & Legislative Affairs initiatives
• Adoption or amendment of organizational policies
• Annual budgets and significant organizational expenditures
• Major fundraising campaigns and development initiatives
• Creation or restructuring of organizational departments and programs
• Appointment of officers and other Board leadership positions
• Appointment of additional Directors when applicable
• Major partnerships, affiliations, agreements, and institutional relationships
• Significant public policy initiatives or official organizational positions
• Major expansion of StateDefenseForce.com and affiliated Council projects
• Other significant matters brought before the Board for consideration
Each eligible Director shall ordinarily possess one vote.
Except where the Council’s governing documents or applicable law require a different voting threshold, actions presented to the Board will be determined by the required majority vote of the Directors participating in the decision.
Once the Board reaches a decision, Directors are expected to support the implementation of the Board’s authorized course of action while retaining their right to express differing views during Board deliberations.
No individual Director, officer, department, or program leader may independently commit the Council to a major organizational policy, legislative advocacy position, significant expenditure, or strategic initiative when Board approval is required.
The purpose of this structure is to ensure that the direction of The State Guard & Defense Force Council is determined through collaborative governance rather than by any single individual.
WHAT WE MEAN BY A “WORKING DIRECTOR”
Directors of The State Guard & Defense Force Council are expected to contribute three things:
LEADERSHIP
Participate in the governance and strategic direction of the organization and fulfill the fiduciary responsibilities associated with service on the Board of Directors.
ACTIVE SERVICE
Take ownership of a defined organizational portfolio, department, program, or major initiative and remain actively involved in its development and success.
FINANCIAL & FUNDRAISING COMMITMENT
Help ensure that the organization has the financial resources necessary to accomplish its mission through personal philanthropy, fundraising participation, donor development, sponsorship development, grant opportunities, professional relationships, or other resource-development activities.
This position is intended for individuals who want to help build the organization, not simply advise it from a distance.
DIRECTOR LEADERSHIP PORTFOLIOS
Depending upon professional background, experience, and organizational needs, a Director may assume responsibility for one or more areas including:
Operations & Organizational Development
Oversee internal processes, organizational planning, volunteer and contractor management, program development, and operational expansion.
Media & Editorial Operations
Help oversee StateDefenseForce.com editorial standards, news coverage, public affairs relationships, podcasts, video production, social media, and public communications.
Technology & Digital Infrastructure
Provide leadership involving websites, WordPress, cybersecurity, hosting infrastructure, data management, automation, and development of new digital platforms.
Development & Fundraising
Assist with donor development, fundraising campaigns, grant strategy, sponsorship opportunities, philanthropic partnerships, and long-term financial sustainability.
Government & Legislative Affairs
Support the Council’s Office of Government & Legislative Affairs, research legislation affecting State Defense Forces, develop policy recommendations, coordinate legislative outreach, and support nonpartisan advocacy initiatives.
History, Education & Research
Support the Center for State Defense Force History, historical archives, digitization projects, educational initiatives, research publications, and preservation of State Guard history.
Individual portfolios will be established based upon the selected Director’s experience and the needs of the Council.
CORE BOARD RESPONSIBILITIES
Directors are expected to:
• Participate actively in Board meetings and organizational decision-making
• Review organizational financial information and major policies
• Participate in strategic planning and organizational development
• Provide oversight of organizational programs and resources
• Maintain confidentiality when handling privileged or sensitive organizational information
• Identify and disclose potential conflicts of interest
• Protect the reputation, independence, and integrity of the organization
• Assist in recruiting talented volunteers, advisors, staff, contractors, and future Directors
• Represent the organization professionally when interacting with government officials, military organizations, donors, foundations, journalists, and the public
• Maintain the Council’s nonpartisan institutional approach
• Support fundraising and long-term financial sustainability
• Remain actively engaged between Board meetings
PERSONAL PHILANTHROPY & FUNDRAISING
The State Guard & Defense Force Council believes members of its Board should demonstrate personal commitment to the mission they govern.
Directors are therefore expected to make an annual personal charitable contribution at a level meaningful to their individual financial circumstances and to actively participate in the Council’s fundraising and resource development efforts.
Directors who are willing and able to make substantial philanthropic contributions, sponsor organizational initiatives, help underwrite new programs, introduce potential donors or institutional partners, or assist the Council in securing significant grants are strongly encouraged to apply.
Financial contribution alone does not qualify an individual for Board service and does not provide ownership, additional voting authority, or preferential treatment within the organization.
Directors are selected based upon their experience, judgment, character, ability to contribute to the mission, and willingness to perform the responsibilities of Board service.

This position requires good judgment, consistency, professionalism, and the ability to enforce organizational rules impartially. Material involving legislation, government policy, elected officials, or military policy may still be relevant when directly connected to State Defense Forces, but discussions must remain focused on the substantive State Guard or military issue rather than partisan advocacy.

North Carolina State Defense Force
The StateDefenseForce.com community is focused on legally established government State Defense Forces, State Guards, State Military Reserves, National Guard organizations, and related official military institutions.
10. Suspension & Ban Process

If another violation occurs within the following 90 days, the member may be suspended from the group for 28 days.
If another violation occurs within 90 days after reinstatement from suspension, the member may be permanently banned from the group.

– Other material prohibited under StateDefenseForce.com community standards

The Social Media Moderator will regularly visit and monitor the StateDefenseForce.com Discord community.
Responsibilities include:
– Review active conversations and discussion channels.
– Help ensure discussions remain related to State Defense Forces, State Guards, the U.S. military, National Guard, military history, emergency management, StateDefenseForce.com projects, or other approved subjects.
