Maryland Defense Force Participates in Baltimore Ravens Salute to Service at Thursday Night Football

On November 7, 2024, the Maryland Defense Force (MDDF) proudly participated in the Baltimore Ravens’ Salute to Service, an annual event dedicated to honoring military members and veterans for their commitment to safeguarding the nation. Before the Ravens faced off against the Cincinnati Bengals at M&T Bank Stadium, MDDF soldiers joined veterans and their families to unfurl a massive American flag across the field. This symbolic display filled the stadium as the crowd prepared for the National Anthem, a powerful reminder of unity and respect for those who serve.

As the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets performed the National Anthem, MDDF soldiers, under the leadership of Sgt. Maj. (MD) Matthew Markle, showcased their precision and professionalism, working alongside military veterans to create a stirring visual tribute to America. Additionally, Baltimore’s starting defensive players entered the field with members of the Maryland National Guard, amplifying the Salute to Service atmosphere and underscoring the Ravens’ commitment to honoring the military. “Our team did an outstanding job tonight. They were all squared away,” remarked Sgt. Maj. Markle, reflecting on the dedication shown by his team. Brig. Gen. (MD) Gregory J. Juday, commanding general of the MDDF, echoed this sentiment, expressing gratitude for the chance to be part of such an impactful event. “This was a wonderful event for our MDDF volunteers. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to participate and honor those who have served.”

State Defense Forces, like the MDDF, have increasingly been invited to participate in such public events like this one to highlight their commitment to service. These events allow state defense personnel to connect with the community and showcase the vital support they provide to their state and nation, reminding everyone of the invaluable role these soldiers play in both community engagement and state readiness.

MDDF Supports Baltimore Ravens Salute to Service

On November 7, 2024 before the Baltimore Ravens took on the Cincinnati Bengals for Thursday Night Football an American Flag Detail from the Maryland Defense Force (MDDF) supported the game’s pre-game ceremonies. The MDDF was invited to participate as part of the Baltimore Ravens Salute to Service initiative to thank military members who protect our nation at home and abroad.

The MDDF team worked with a group of military veterans and their families to unfurl a large field American flag before the National Anthem was performed by the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets. Other elements of the pre-game ceremonies included the introduction of Baltimore’s starting defensive players running onto the field with members of the Maryland National Guard.

“Our team did an outstanding job tonight. They were all squared away. I am proud and honored to have been on the field with them tonight,” said Sgt. Maj. (MD) Matthew Markle who led the MDDF team. “This was a wonderful event for our MDDF volunteers. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to participate and honor those who have served,” said Brig. Gen. (MD) Gregory J. Juday, commanding general of the MDDF.

The Maryland Defense Force (MDDF) is the State’s uniformed volunteer militia unit providing competent, supplementary, professional and technical support and soldiers to the Maryland Military Department and the State of Maryland as needed. Established in 1917, the MDDF consists of nearly 200 personnel who perform legal, engineering, finance, medical, chaplain, field support and ceremonial services for the State of Maryland.
