Texas State Guard 1st Brigade Prepares for Annual Training with State Military Readiness Program

April marks a critical time for the Texas State Guard (State Defense Force)—it’s the season for Annual Training, a time when each brigade across the state prepares to sharpen their skills and reinforce their readiness to serve. For the soldiers of the 1st Brigade, this began with the State Military Readiness Program (SMRP) during their March 22, 2025, weekend drill, held at the Texas National Guard Armory in Dallas, Texas.

The SMRP is an essential process that ensures all troops are fully prepared for the intensive weeklong Annual Training. Each soldier underwent a thorough administrative review to confirm that all required paperwork was accurate and up to date. This included updating contact information, emergency notification forms, next-of-kin details, legal documents such as wills or powers of attorney (if applicable), and verification of service records. Equipment needs were also assessed, ensuring each Guardsman had proper uniforms, protective gear, ID cards, and essential supplies ahead of the upcoming training cycle.

Medical readiness was another major focus. Soldiers cycled through medical evaluation stations where healthcare professionals checked blood pressure, confirmed compliance with height and weight standards, reviewed medical records, and documented any new or ongoing medical conditions. These assessments are crucial in determining a Guardsman’s fitness to train and deploy under demanding conditions. Additionally, updates to personal medical histories, prescriptions, and any required clearances for physical activity were reviewed.

A highlight of the event was the presence of mobile Carter BloodCare units, offering soldiers the opportunity to donate blood. This voluntary act of service supports hospitals and medical clinics across Texas, helping to save lives and demonstrate the Guard’s commitment to the welfare of all Texans—both in and out of uniform.

As Annual Training kicks off across the state, every brigade of the Texas State Guard is undergoing similar preparation to ensure mission readiness. From administrative updates to medical evaluations, these steps are vital in maintaining a professional and deployable force. The soldiers of the 1st Brigade, like their counterparts throughout Texas, are standing ready to respond whenever they are called—living up to the proud motto of the Texas State Guard: Equal to the Task.

As part of the State Military Readiness Program (SMRP) and in preparation for Annual Training, the 1st Brigade, Texas State Guard conducted a readiness event at the Texas National Guard Armory in Dallas, Texas, on March 22, 2025. The event is to ensure every guardsman is fully prepared to meet readiness requirements for deployment and various operational tasks.
