The New York Guard in Action during the COVID-19 Activation

The National Guard recently posted a series of photographs of soldiers working from the field and command centers assisting state and local authorities during the Coronavirus national emergency.  Working side by side with the Army National Guard were New York Guard (State Defense Force) troops assisting in this crucial mission.

 

Cortlandt Manor, NY – 2LT Zachary Perkins, New York Guard, serving as the J3 Current Ops officer, briefs the leadership and staff of Joint Task Force (JTF) 2 on the status of missions in Joint Operations Area (JOA) 2, which included the New Rochelle containment zone, while 2LT Alexander Cisneros, New York Guard coordinates the force structure of the joint force teams of New York Military Forces being tasked to those missions.

Both LT Perkins and LT Cisneros are assigned to Joint Task Force 2 located at Camp Smith Training Site, working alongside and supporting the New York National Guard and NY State multi-agency response to COVID-19. Since activating in response to OP COVID19 New York Guard soldiers are currently augmenting sections of the JTF 2 EOC/TOC at Camp Smith and serving in essential command and control roles to support operations throughout New York State. Camp Smith Training Site (CSTS), Cortland Manor, NY Sergeant Orlanda Villia, 56th Area Command, and Sergeant Michael Tatum, 88th Area Command, New York Guard reviewing the Range Facility Management Support System (RFMSS) for billeting at CSTS. SGT Villa and SGT Tatum are assigned to Joint Task Force 2 Alpha team at Camp Smith Training Site where they are providing logistics and billeting assistance supporting the New York National Guard and NY State multi-agency response to COVID-19.

The New York Guard currently has 60 service members on paid state active duty supporting National Guard efforts throughout the state. The New York Guard is a state volunteer force which augments and supports the New York National Guard with manpower and skills during State Emergencies and Domestic operations when called upon by the National Guard. Specialist Samantha Trejo of the New York Guard works the phones on March 21st, 2020 in Syracuse, New York. Specialist Trejo is following up on issues that have occurred in Joint Task Force (JTF) 4.

New York’s Division of Military and Naval Affairs is utilizing every asset that they have including soldiers from the New York Guard.

JTF 4 is responding to civilian authorities’ requests for assistance across the central part of New York State.

Private First Class Stefen Sharkey of the New York Guard listens during a briefing in the 27th Combat Infantry Team Brigade’s Tactical Operations Center (TOC) on March 21s, 2020. PFC Sharkey is in Syracuse conducting radio telephone operations in the TOC. This is to ensure that communications are always maintained.
