New York Guard Recruits Go Through Basic Training

During the New York Guard’s Annual Training week the a new Initial Entry Training Class (Basic Training) was held for new recruits who recently joined the State Guard. The New York Guard (State Defense Force) requires every new recruit to go through an Initial Entry Training program unless they served in the United States Military. The Initial Entry Training program takes these new recruits and provides them Basic Military instruction, they are provided knowledge on how the chain of command functions, they learn Drill & Ceremony, as well as First Aid, Land Navigation, Military Law, etc. Once they finish their Basic Training they will be assigned to their home units and be ready to serve their State & Country.

Initial Entry Training in each State Defense Force puts new recruits through a similar environment and experience they would receive in the United States military. The program ensures that recruits can meet the physical and mental requirements the military requires of service members, so when called to active duty they can respond to any Statewide emergency.

Camp Smith Training Center, Cortlandt Manor, NY – During the week of August 14-20th, New York Guard Service Members from across the state came together to further their military careers by participating in Annual Training. Recently enlisted Soldiers participated in Initial Entry Training where they learned customs, courtesies, and basic skills required to be effective members.
PV2 Lyston, a Soldier in the IET class, from Brooklyn NY had this to say, “Training is good. I really enjoy the Emergency Medical course because it ties into my background.” Lyston is one of the many Soldiers in this year’s IET class who are Emergency medical Technicians.
CPL Avolio, an instructor for the IET class, said that the Soldiers are working well together. “It’s going good.” he said, “There were a few bumps in the road, but they’re really coming together. They’re better than expected.”
New York Guard Soldiers who are in the IET class are learning to be a team and to work together. They are putting their military skills that they learn during this week to use to be an asset to their units.
