From the US Marine Corps to the Ohio Military Reserve, Command Sergeant Major of the Ohio State Defense Force (E10) Richard Backus led a long and distinguished history of service to his State and Country. CSM Backus started his career years ago by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps, after serving in the military he continued his career by becoming a Police Officer in the city of Toledo, Ohio. Following a career as a Police Officer he joined and became a Firefighter & Paramedic in Luckey, Ohio. This was not enough for CSM Richard Backus, he soon decided to join the Ohio State Defense Force and continue to serve his State & Country once again in the Military.
After a long and incredible career Command Sergeant Major Backus is due to retire at the end of 2022. We would like to thank this incredible Soldier & Marine for his lifelong service to Ohio and the United States.
CSM Richard Backus will be retiring at the end of TY22. He has served in various capacities to save and protect life in his military and civilian career. CSM Backus has served as the OHSDF and OHMR BDE Command Sergeant Major starting his career in the 1BN. CSM Backus has served faithfully as a United States Marine, a police officer, fire fighter, paramedic in Toledo and Luckey, Ohio. He has reached his mandatory retirement age, and has led a life of complete service devoted to others. Thank you for all you do and did for your community, state, and country. Semper Fidelis!
