Maryland Defense Force Takes Part in Historic Inauguration of First African American Governor

The November 2022 general election in Maryland was a historic one. On the ballot were two contenders for the highest office in the State,  Dan Cox (R) and Wes Moore (D). By the end of the night the results clearly favored Wes Moore with 64.5% of the vote. This became a pivotal moment in The States history as Wes Moore became the first African-American to hold the office of Governor of Maryland.

To Celebrate this Historic occasion thousands of voters and citizens packed the streets outside The Maryland State House. The Governor was sworn alongside his wife and family to become Maryland’s 63rd Governor.

The Maryland Defense Force supported the event in a variety of missions, from providing logistical support, working with The Maryland State Police and National Guard, to assisting with Public Affairs duties. The Defense Force also served as military escorts for special dignitaries such as The Lt. Governor Aruna Miller.

We would like to Congratulate Governor Wes Moore for making history in this historical election.

MDDF Supports Historic Gubernatorial Inauguration
On January 18, 2023 thirty-eight members of the Maryland Defense Force (MDDF) served in support of the inauguration of Governor Wes Moore as Maryland’s first African-American governor and Lt. Governor Aruna Miller as Maryland’s first immigrant and first South Asian-American lieutenant governor. MDDF personnel served as military escorts for dignitaries, provided logistics support and public affairs support for the event. The MDDF Band also performed musical selections.
A procession of dignitaries and their military escorts was led by Brig. Gen. (MD) Gregory J. Juday, the commanding general of the MDDF, from Government House (the Maryland Governor’s Mansion) to the State Capitol for the formal swearing in of Governor Moore and Lt. Governor Miller. This procession included military escorts from the Maryland Defense Force and the Maryland National Guard. Their route to the State Capitol was lined by saluting police units from across the state. After the public swearing-in on the capitol steps, the military escorts walked their assigned dignitaries back into the State Capitol for the Inaugural Reception. The MDDF Band, also known as “Maryland’s Musical Ambassadors,” served as the Inaugural Reception’s musical entertainment.
“It was an honor and a privilege for the MDDF to participate in this historic event,” said Brig. Gen. (MD) Gregory J. Juday, commanding general of the MDDF. “Our volunteers were professional and our mission was well executed. We were all proud to have the opportunity to support our new commander in chief, Governor Wes Moore and Lt. Governor Aruna Miller,” Juday continued.
The Maryland Defense Force (MDDF) is the State’s uniformed volunteer militia unit providing competent, supplementary, professional and technical support and soldiers to the Maryland Military Department and the State of Maryland as needed. Established in 1917, the MDDF consists of nearly 200 personnel who perform legal, engineering, finance, medical, chaplain, field support and ceremonial services for the State of Maryland.
