California State Senator Receives Tour of Sunburst Youth Challenge Academy From State Guard Director

Recently State Senator David Min of California’s 37th district visited The Join Forces Training Base Los Alamitos. This is the largest California State Military base throughout the state, home to multiple units and headquarters commands. During his visit The Senator received multiple briefings regarding the base, tours of the facility and information regarding the missions of the multiple units stationed there.

One such tour was of The Sunburst Youth Challenge Academy, a California Military program designed to assist Teens who are struggling in their lives. The program offers at risk teens an opportunity to develop their lives in leadership roles rather than being influenced by negative elements in their communities. The Academy provides core skills such as discipline, self-confidence, determination, and decision making to instill leadership qualities in every cadet.

The Director of the Program, Lt. Col. Gilbert Sanchez of The California State Guard (State Defense Force), provided the State Senator a tour of the facility and its dormitories. During the tour the commander discussed the mission of the program, its accomplishments as well as its unique high school credit recovery program.
