Brigadier General Isabel Smith, the distinguished National Guard Director of the Joint Staff for the New York Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ), recently embarked on a visit to Camp Smith, The New York National Guard training site. During her tour, BG Smith visited and spoke with The Initial Entry Training (IET – SDF Basic Training) and Officer Candidate School (OCS) classes of the New York Guard, leaving an indelible mark on the aspiring troops. Accompanying her was Brigadier General Peter Riley, the Commander of the New York Guard, who is a prior service Army Officer and Combat Veteran.
With her profound commitment to fostering the growth of future leaders, Brigadier General Smith spoke with the Officer Candidate School (OCS) class, providing invaluable insights into their future career in The New York Guard. This unique visit not only offered the candidates a chance to showcase their hard-earned skills but also provided them with an inspiring mentor in BG Smith.
The General also spoke with the new recruits of IET, who are undergoing their weeklong Basic Training. Expressing her heartfelt appreciation for their unwavering dedication and selfless service to the citizens of the State of New York, BG Smith’s words resonated deeply, instilling a sense of pride and purpose among these future soldiers.

New York Guard Brigadier General Peter Riley, welcomed the service members of the New York Guard, to Annual Training at Camp Smith Training Site on Sunday, 13 August. BG Riley’s “Commander’s Welcome” focused primarily on the diverse, new class of Initial Entry Recruits. This IET class is one of the largest in recent memory with 59 students in total.To help ensure the successful integration of the various groups that comprise IET 2023, Lieutenant Colonel Chris St. Victor spoke on the subject of Sexual Harassment.
