California State Guard and US Coast Guard Join Forces for Fleet Week 2023

San Francisco’s renowned Fleet Week 2023 experienced enhanced maritime coordination as the California State Guard’s (State Defense Force) Maritime element teamed up with the US Coast Guard to safeguard the bustling waters surrounding the city. The State Guard’s Maritime division undertook the critical task of patrolling the Coast Guard Sector of San Francisco, focusing keenly on the air show safety box. This collaboration was of paramount importance given the convergence of numerous recreational vessels in the area, requiring vigilant oversight to maintain order and safety.

In light of the dense maritime traffic that characterizes such grand events, the California State Guard Maritime department astutely recognized the need for heightened surveillance. They swiftly rallied for additional sailors to stand extra lookout watches, ensuring any potential hazards from the close proximity of boats were promptly identified and addressed. This preemptive measure not only ensured the smooth sailing of events but also reinforced the Maritime department’s commitment to ensuring public safety.

This year marks the third consecutive year that the California State Guard has extended its support to the festivities of Fleet Week. Their continued participation highlights their dedication to serving the state and its citizens, and underlines the significance of the State Guard in such large-scale events that draw massive crowds both on land and at sea. The relationship between the California State Guard and United States Coast Guard ensures that events like Fleet Week can proceed without a hitch, providing a spectacular show to attendees while maintaining the highest standards of safety.

In order to safely execute the Fleet Week mission, the MLB crew needed to take on additional sailors to stand extra lookout watches given the close quarters of so many recreational vessels. Regular complement is 5. We needed to double that for this mission. The only place available to us was the marina at Tiburon and it was quite a squeeze for our 20 ton MLB (the largest in the entire marina with exception to the Angel Island ferry). The crew moored her up flawlessly and even received multiple accolades from stay aboard boat owners in the other slips. Afterwards the crew enjoyed a well earned meal on Corinthian Island. BZ to all!!

Cal Guard 47 had the honor of sharing the dock at Angel Island State Park with USCG Cutter Blackfin (WPB-87327) during San Francisco Fleet Week. She was our overwatch during patrol hours and provided incident management to over 50 allied agency vessels working the air show.
