Alaska’s Legendary HHC Scouts Collaborate With MAT+SAR in Earthquake Response Drill

The Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), renowned for its HHC Scouts, a unit with a storied history of collaboration with the US Army Green Berets for Domain Awareness patrols along the Alaskan coastline, has once again demonstrated its versatility and dedication to community service. This time, the HHC Scouts joined forces with the MAT+SAR Search & Rescue organization, a non-profit entity founded in 2003, dedicated to serving the Matanuska Susitna Valley in South Central Alaska and other areas as directed by the Alaska State Troopers. Despite facing the challenge of a snowed-in armory, the HHC Scouts and MAT+SAR conducted urban search-and-rescue training centered around a simulated 8.9 magnitude earthquake scenario. Tasked with searching buildings for survivors and ensuring their safety, the ASDF showcased its unwavering commitment to aiding Alaskans in times of emergency, embodying the spirit of “Defend Alaska!”

The ASDF’s scope of operations extends far beyond these recent endeavors, encompassing a wide array of missions critical to the safety and well-being of Alaska’s residents. These missions include joint aerial survey operations, the establishment of remote communication stations across the state, and Search & Rescue missions in the aftermath of natural disasters. The ASDF’s collaborative efforts with a multitude of state and federal agencies, especially the National Guard, underscore its pivotal role in Alaska’s comprehensive emergency response and defense strategy. Through these diverse missions, the ASDF not only enhances its operational capabilities but also strengthens the fabric of community support and resilience across Alaska, ensuring that it remains ready and responsive to the needs of its citizens in any situation.

Even a snowed-in armory this weekend could not slow down our HHC Scouts! They teamed up with MATSAR for urban search-and-rescue training. The scenario revolved around an 8.9 earthquake; our scouts were tasked with searching buildings for survivors and assisting them to safety. ASDF stands ready to help our fellow Alaskans when emergencies arise.
