Virginia Defense Force Tests Communication and Operations Support in Major Readiness Exercise

The Virginia Defense Force (VDF) conducted a comprehensive statewide readiness exercise on May 4, 2024, with activities spanning multiple locations across the state. Company-level command posts were strategically established in Fairfax, Winchester, Warrenton, Lynchburg, and Virginia Beach, while the joint operations center was set up in Richmond. The exercise was designed to test and enhance the VDF’s organic communications, access control, and operations center augmentation support capabilities, all within the context of a simulated severe weather scenario. Col. Christopher Dunn, the Virginia National Guard J3 director of joint operations, visited the VDF operations center to gain a deeper understanding of the VDF’s capabilities and their integration with National Guard operations.

One of the primary missions of the Virginia Defense Force is to provide robust communication backup support to the National Guard, particularly in scenarios where cell phone communication is disrupted due to severe weather or statewide emergencies. This critical function ensures that the National Guard can maintain operational continuity and effective coordination during crises. Additionally, the VDF regularly assists the National Guard at their Emergency Operations Center during emergencies, making this training exercise invaluable. By honing their skills and testing their systems in realistic scenarios, the VDF ensures they are well-prepared to support the National Guard and the citizens of Virginia during times of need.
