A new class of recruits is beginning their transformative 22-week journey as part of the National Guard ChalleNGe program, supported by the Maryland Defense Force. This program aims to reclaim the lives of at-risk youth by equipping them with the values, life skills, education, and self-discipline necessary to become productive citizens. Youth Challenge is a program that offers young people, who have either dropped out of school or are not progressing satisfactorily, the opportunity to change their futures. Participants learn self-discipline, leadership, and responsibility while working towards obtaining their high school diploma or equivalency, providing them a pathway to success outside of the traditional school setting.
Guiding these recruits through this half-year program is a dedicated cadre of National Guard soldiers, airmen, and Maryland Defense Force troops. These leaders provide essential mentorship and training, helping the recruits develop the skills and leadership qualities needed to graduate from the program. Upon completion, participants will be equipped to utilize and further develop these skills in their civilian careers or in military service if they choose to enlist.
Nearly every State National Guard has a ChalleNGe program, and most State Defense Forces, including the Maryland Defense Force, provide troops to support and augment their National Guard counterparts. This collaborative effort ensures that the youth participating in the program receive comprehensive guidance and support, enhancing their chances of becoming successful and productive members of society.
