On August 4, 2024, Muniz Air Base served as the site for an intensive training mission focused on preparing personnel for an active shooter scenario with hostages on base. The joint exercise brought together members of the Puerto Rico State Guard (State Defense Force) and airmen from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard’s 156th Wing (156AW). Certified instructors from the 156AW led the training, emphasizing Tactical Combat Casualty Care. Participants engaged in multiple real-life scenarios, practicing critical entry and exit procedures, space verification, and perimeter security, enhancing their readiness to respond to high-threat situations.
This comprehensive training allowed both groups to develop and refine essential skills in handling active shooter situations. All participating soldiers, airmen and aviators were fully immersed in the training’s various components, enabling them to experience the challenges and demands of such incidents firsthand. At the conclusion of the course, each participant received a certificate from the 156AW, recognizing their completion of the specialized training.
Training for active shooter scenarios on military bases has become increasingly vital given the surge in such incidents across the country. The collaboration between the Puerto Rico State Guard and the Puerto Rico Air National Guard is a proactive measure to ensure that both organizations are prepared to protect personnel and assets effectively in the event of an emergency. Airmen from the State Command, along with airmen from the 156AW, participated in all facets of the different scenarios that took place. The training was provided by 156AW certified instructors in Tactical Combat Victim Care. Entry and exit scenarios, as well as verification of spaces and perimeter safety, among other aspects, were practiced. Our Airmen received a certificate from the 156AW for completing the course.
