Texas State Guard 1st Brigade Celebrates Family Day, Strengthening Soldier-Family Bonds

On August 17, 2024, Guardsmen from the 4th Battalion, 1st Brigade of the Texas State Guard gathered at the National Guard Armory in Fort Worth, Texas, for a memorable Family Day event. The day was an opportunity for soldiers and their families to come together, celebrating their shared service and dedication. Attendees were treated to a special tour of a Chinook helicopter, courtesy of the 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation Regiment, under the 36th Combat Aviation Brigade (36th Infantry Division). The highlight of the event was the introduction of Katy Donaghue, the new Family Readiness Group (FRG) Coordinator and wife of the 4th Battalion Commander, James Donaghue. Katy’s role is vital in supporting soldiers and their families, ensuring they remain informed and connected, especially during deployments. The FRG provides a robust support network, enhancing communication and solidarity among service members’ loved ones.

Family Day is not only a celebration but also a chance for families to visit training facilities and better understand the important work their loved ones do. Events like these allow family members to see firsthand what their parents, brothers, or sisters experience during training, building pride and understanding. Family Days are common across many State Defense Forces, helping to unite and strengthen their ranks. By fostering community and connection, these events fortify the bonds between soldiers and their families, ultimately enhancing the overall strength and mission readiness of the force.
