Mississippi State Guard: Baton Training, New Recruits, and Inspiring Stories of Service

The Mississippi State Guard (MSSG – State Defense Force), an integral part of the Mississippi Military Department, recently showcased its commitment to preparedness and public safety by conducting baton training with members of the 315th Military Police (MP) Company during their December drill. Baton training is a vital skill for the Military Police units within the MSSG, who play a crucial role in augmenting law enforcement agencies during natural disasters or statewide emergencies. Knowing how to use a baton effectively and defend oneself with it becomes particularly critical in scenarios where mobs might form, potentially threatening government buildings or public safety. This training reinforces the MSSG’s motto, “Strength Through Support,” as they remain ready to serve the Magnolia State in times of need.

In addition to enhancing their readiness, the Mississippi State Guard continues to grow its ranks. Recently, the organization welcomed new recruits during a swearing-in ceremony, including Pvt. J. Savage, Pvt. Z. Crain, Private 1st Class K. Jordan, and Private 1st Class T. Jordan. These new members will now embark on Initial Entry Training (IET), a months-long process designed to transition civilians into military-ready soldiers. For applicants with prior U.S. military service, this step is often waived, allowing them to immediately integrate into their assigned units. The MSSG’s ability to attract and develop new talent underscores its dedication to maintaining a robust and capable force.

The MSSG also makes it a point to celebrate its members, regularly spotlighting soldiers and sharing their stories. This month, Sergeant Parker shared her journey, explaining why she chose to serve with the Mississippi State Guard. Unable to join the U.S. military, she found a fulfilling alternative in the MSSG. Sgt. Parker expressed her love for the training, the sense of camaraderie among members, and the opportunity to help others. Her story is a testament to the rewarding experiences and strong bonds formed within the State Guard, making it a meaningful path for those who wish to contribute to their community and state.

Serving in the Mississippi State Guard is an excellent way to give back to your state and country, especially for those who may not qualify for the U.S. Armed Forces. Statistics show that about 75% of applicants are unable to enlist in the military due to various reasons, such as medical disqualifications. The MSSG offers these individuals a chance to serve, gain valuable skills, and make a difference.
