Texas State Guard Honors Retirement of Command Sergeant Major Dewayne Naumann After 21 Years of Service

On February 22, 2025, the Texas State Guard (State Defense Force) gathered with family and friends at Martindale Army Heliport in San Antonio to honor Command Sergeant Major Dewayne Naumann, senior enlisted advisor of the 4th Battalion, 6th Brigade, on the occasion of his retirement. After 21 years of selfless service to the state of Texas, Sgt. Maj. Naumann stepped down from his duties, leaving behind a legacy defined by duty, dedication, and a profound commitment to his fellow Texans.

During the heartfelt retirement ceremony, a host of Texas State Guard leaders were present to recognize Sgt. Maj. Naumann’s decades-long contributions. Distinguished guests included Maj. Gen. Roger O. Sheridan, Commanding General of the Texas State Guard; Command Sgt. Maj. Harlan L. Thompson, Senior Enlisted Advisor for the TXSG; Command Sgt. Maj. David Ocasio, Senior Enlisted Advisor for the 6th Brigade; Lt. Col. Michael Moore, Commanding Officer of the 4th Battalion, 6th Brigade; and 1st Sgt. Philip Harralson, Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of the 4th Battalion, 6th Brigade. Also in attendance were the soldiers of the 4th Battalion whom he had led, mentored, and guided throughout their missions and journey as soldiers.

Command Sergeant Major Naumann was honored with multiple awards for his long-standing commitment, leadership, and mentorship. These commendations reflected his tireless efforts in preparing the Guard to respond to missions ranging from natural disasters to homeland security operations. Throughout his career, Sgt. Maj. Naumann served as a cornerstone of the 6th Brigade and set a standard of excellence for others to follow.

It is essential to recognize individuals like Sgt. Maj. Naumann, who dedicate years—often decades—of their lives in service to their state and country. Their devotion ensures that Texas, and by extension the nation, is ready to respond whenever emergencies strike. These guardsmen remain on-call, ready to save lives, protect communities, and restore order in the wake of disaster. Their sacrifices go far beyond drills and training—they represent a promise that help is always on the way when Texans need it most.

As Sgt. Maj. Naumann enters retirement, his legacy leaves behind a call to action. The Texas State Guard, like all State Defense Forces, thrives because of citizens who choose to serve. It is imperative that more men and women step forward to follow in Sgt. Maj. Naumann’s footsteps—to dedicate themselves to a mission greater than themselves, and to ensure a safe, secure future for our communities.

We thank Command Sergeant Major Dewayne Naumann for his incredible service, and we encourage others to rise to the challenge he so honorably met for more than two decades.
