The State Guard & Defense Force Council’s (Also known as StateDefenseForce.com) Office of Government & Legislative Affairs has taken another important step in its ongoing efforts to improve compensation, benefits, and protections for America’s State Defense Force soldiers. As preparations begin for the 2027 Georgia Legislative Session, our organization has formally submitted a legislative proposal to Georgia lawmakers aimed at addressing one of the most significant issues facing the Georgia State Defense Force (GSDF): the lack of guaranteed compensation when soldiers are activated to perform operational missions on behalf of the State.
Currently, members of the Georgia State Defense Force can be called upon to leave their civilian employment, families, and personal responsibilities to support state emergency operations without receiving compensation for their service. We believe this is an issue that must be addressed. When Georgia asks its State Defense Force soldiers to answer the call during emergencies, disasters, and other operational missions, those soldiers deserve to be compensated for their time, sacrifice, and service.
Over the past several weeks, our Office of Government & Legislative Affairs has conducted extensive research into Georgia’s existing military laws and developed both a comprehensive legislative proposal and a proposed legislative bill. These documents have been forwarded to Georgia lawmakers for consideration ahead of the upcoming legislative session. Our approach focuses on achieving a meaningful and practical first step toward ensuring that Georgia State Defense Force soldiers receive compensation when performing operational State Active Duty missions, while avoiding the creation of unnecessary financial obligations for routine training and administrative activities.
Although this represents an important milestone, our work is far from over. We will continue engaging with Georgia legislators, military officials, and other stakeholders to advance this proposal through the legislative process. Our ultimate objective is to secure the legislative support necessary to turn this proposal into law.
