South Carolina State Guard Honors Revolutionary War Hero at Francis Marion Park Ceremony

The South Carolina State Guard (State Defense Force), under the leadership of Major General Leon Lott, recently took part in a significant event that honored the historical legacy of one of South Carolina’s most revered figures. On February 1, 2024, in Charleston, S.C., the Guard participated in the Francis Marion Park artifact dedication ceremony, standing shoulder to shoulder with Governor Henry McMaster and various esteemed guests. This momentous occasion not only commemorated the valor and legacy of General Francis Marion but also highlighted the deep historical roots of the South Carolina State Guard (SCSG) itself. Established initially as the Charleston Militia in 1670, the State Guard has been an unbroken chain of service, safeguarding the citizens of South Carolina for over 350 years. The dedication to General Francis Marion and all individuals who have served South Carolina throughout its history underscores the Guard’s enduring commitment to honor, duty, and state pride.

General Francis Marion, often celebrated as the “Swamp Fox,” is a luminary figure in American history, particularly noted for his guerilla warfare tactics during the American Revolution. Marion’s unconventional methods of engaging the British forces in the swamps of South Carolina not only frustrated the enemy but also significantly contributed to the American struggle for independence. His ability to swiftly strike and then vanish into the South Carolina backcountry earned him not only his nickname but also the admiration of patriots and the grudging respect of his foes. Marion’s leadership and strategic acumen played a pivotal role in disrupting British operations in the South, making his contributions invaluable to the American victory. The dedication of artifacts in his honor at Francis Marion Park serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy, ensuring that future generations remember his service and the pivotal role he played in securing America’s freedom.

The South Carolina State Guard, let by MG Leon Lott, was proud to be a part of the Francis Marion Park artifact dedication ceremony on 1 February 2024 in Charleston, S.C., alongside our Commander in Chief Henry McMaster and other distinguished guests. The South Carolina State Guard can trace its roots to the founding of the Charleston Militia in 1670 and has continued to serve faithfully for the citizens of South Carolina for over 350 years. We honor General Francis Marion and all who have served the great state of South Carolina during her history. #SCSG #TrainedAndReady
