Preparing for the Unexpected: Texas National Guard and State Guard Conduct Joint Communications Exercise

In a recent initiative aimed at enhancing state-wide emergency response capabilities, Texas State Guard (State Defense Force) members collaborated with the Texas National Guard to partake in the Texas Interoperable Communications Exercise (TICE) from February 26 to March 1, 2024. Hosted by the Texas Military Department (TMD) and spearheaded by the TMD J-6 at the Round Rock Readiness Center, this exercise was a pivotal training event designed to boost interoperability and operational proficiency in communication systems. The exercise saw noncommissioned officers gaining hands-on experience in the movement, operations, and maintenance of specialized equipment, while officers delved into the intricacies of Mission Command Systems. This initiative is part of the TMD’s broader strategy to support the State of Texas Emergency Plan through the provision of trained, reliable Mission Ready Packages (MRPs), which include mission command and various communication MRPs essential for managing emergencies.

The Texas State Guard’s (TXSG) engagement in the TICE underscores their commitment to preparing for natural disaster responses and enhancing their communication capabilities before the onset of hurricane season. By providing personnel and equipment for the annual TICE training, the TXSG ensures its service members are well-trained and capable of supporting National Guard Civil Support (NGCS) communication missions. The exercise not only fosters readiness but also strengthens the Guard’s ability to provide critical communication support during emergencies, reflecting their ongoing dedication to safeguarding the residents and infrastructure of Texas.

The noncommissioned officers learned about movement, operations, and maintenance of the specialized equipment and the officers focused on Mission Command Systems. The TMD supports the State of Texas Emergency Plan, by providing trained, reliable Mission Ready Packages (MRPs), including mission command and various communications MRPs that support mission command during emergencies. The Texas State Guard assigns a single natural disaster response team, with each team consisting of four operational members and three leadership awareness personnel.
