South Carolina State Guard Training Hard From Dams to Depths: SC State Guard’s Comprehensive Approach to Infrastructure and Rescue Operations

In South Carolina, the State Guard (State Defense Force) plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and integrity of the state’s critical infrastructure, particularly its dams. With over 10,000 dams scattered throughout the Palmetto State, the importance of regular and thorough inspections cannot be overstated. These evaluations are especially critical following high-water events, which can exacerbate existing vulnerabilities in these structures. The South Carolina State Guard recently focused its training on enhancing the skills needed for dam inspection. During a recent weekend drill, soldiers from the Engineering Detachment and the 2nd Battalion “Highlanders” were immersed in learning the intricacies of dam inspection. This rigorous training ensures that they are well-prepared to identify signs of wear and tear, material degradation, or structural anomalies that could threaten the dams’ integrity, thereby safeguarding the communities living downstream.

Aside from its pivotal role in dam safety, the South Carolina State Guard also boasts a specialized maritime Search & Rescue (SAR) team, known for its proficiency in underwater search and recovery missions. The SARCOM Dive Team, consisting of highly trained public safety and law enforcement divers, represents the State Guard’s commitment to a broad spectrum of maritime operations, including underwater salvage. Their expertise has been instrumental in various missions, including the recovery of sunken vessels, the installation of scientific equipment for the State of South Carolina, retrieval of weapons discarded in water bodies, response to drowning incidents, and participation in the SC Floodwater Rescue Taskforce. Through these critical missions, the SARCOM Dive Team not only enhances the safety and security of South Carolina’s waterways but also contributes significantly to the state’s overall emergency response and disaster preparedness efforts.
