On May 28, 2023, the 1st Brigade of the Texas State Guard participated in a heartfelt event at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery to honor fallen American soldiers in anticipation of Memorial Day. Alongside numerous other volunteers, the brigade dedicated their time and efforts to place American flags at every grave marker in the cemetery. This annual tradition serves as a testament to their commitment to upholding the legacy of remembrance and gratitude for the brave men and women who have served and made ultimate sacrifices for the freedoms that Americans cherish today. Through their collective actions, the 1st Brigade and other volunteers demonstrated their unwavering respect and deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes.
By joining this solemn event, the 1st Brigade of the Texas State Guard continues a long-standing tradition of commemorating the courageous individuals who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Their participation in this memorial ceremony highlights their dedication to preserving the memory and legacy of fallen soldiers. Placing American flags at each grave marker serves as a poignant visual reminder of the profound debt of gratitude owed to those who have selflessly protected the freedoms enjoyed by Americans. In addition to their participation in placing flags at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, the 1st Brigade of the Texas State Guard also took part in the Carry the Load event. Founded by Veteran U.S. Navy SEALs, Clint Bruce, and Stephen Holley, Carry the Load aims to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day. It is a national relay where teams of marchers travel an impressive 20,000 miles across five different routes, covering all 48 states. Their participation in Carry the Load showcases their dedication to upholding the spirit of Memorial Day and ensuring that the true significance of the holiday is recognized and commemorated nationwide.

As part of Military Appreciation Month, Brig. Gen. John Diggs, Commander, 1st Brigade, Texas State Guard, and guardsmen took part in the Carry the Load event on May 28, 2023, in Dallas, Texas, to honor and remember the fallen heroes and restore the true meaning of Memorial Day. The action was organized and participated in earlier that morning by guardsmen from the 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, who planted flags at each grave monument in the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery to honor the service and sacrifice of all those who came before us and the freedoms they secured.
