The Virginia National Guard (VNG), comprising both Soldiers and Airmen, along with the Virginia Defense Force (VDF), played a pivotal role in combating the Quaker Run Fire in Madison County, Virginia, from November 15 to 17, 2023. This collaborative effort, aimed at containing and managing the wildfire, showcased the dedication and skill of these forces in emergency response. Recognizing their significant contribution, approximately 30 members of the Joint Task Force received the Virginia National Guard Emergency Service Ribbon. This honor was bestowed by Colonel Paul Gravely, the Virginia Army National Guard Chief of Staff, during a ceremony held on November 18, 2023, at Fort Barfoot, Virginia.
The VNG and VDF’s involvement in this operation was critical in supporting the Virginia Department of Forestry’s efforts in wild land firefighting. While the VNG Soldiers and Airmen were directly engaged in firefighting, Virginia Defense Force provided indispensable administrative and logistical support. This synergy between the various units underscored the effectiveness of a coordinated response in managing state emergencies. The Emergency Service Ribbon, awarded by the Governor of Virginia, serves as a testament to the personnel’s readiness and commitment to being called to state active duty during such crises.
Across the United States, many State Defense Forces (SDFs) like The California State Guard and Washington State Guard are increasingly partnering with their respective National Guard units in tackling the challenging task of wildland firefighting. This collaborative approach is becoming more common as wildfires grow in frequency and intensity due to climate change. In California, known for its devastating fire seasons, the State Guard plays a crucial role in supporting the California National Guard’s firefighting missions, working side by side on the fire line. Similarly, in Washington, the State Guard assists in various capacities, from operational planning to on-ground support, working alongside the National Guard to protect communities and natural resources from the ravages of wildfires. This trend of SDFs augmenting National Guard efforts reflects a growing recognition of their value in state-level emergency response and disaster mitigation.
