The South Carolina State Guard’s (State Defense Force) 2nd Battalion Highlanders recently hosted a joint drill with the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps – Guadalcanal Squadron from Greenville, SC. The event, held in June, saw the participation of the cadets led by Ens. Ed Leese. These young cadets engaged in various hands-on training exercises such as how HAM Radios function, offering a unique learning experience for both groups. South Carolina State Guard troops also took the opportunity to inspect the naval personnel, who were attired in their summer whites. The drill provided a platform for the cadets to gain deeper insights into the workings of the State Guard, fostering mutual respect. The South Carolina State Guard commended these outstanding cadets for their performance and looks forward to future joint training endeavors.
The South Carolina State Guard actively collaborates with numerous youth organizations, including JROTC programs and Naval Sea Cadets, to impart military knowledge and leadership skills to young individuals. The Guard also operates its own Explorer Program, designed to guide teenagers through their formative years, equipping them with essential leadership qualities and a comprehensive understanding of military values. Such programs play a crucial role in instilling core values like honor, courage, and commitment, potentially inspiring these youths to consider military service as a future career path. Through these initiatives, the South Carolina State Guard aims to cultivate a sense of duty and patriotism among the younger generation, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges of adulthood and service to their country.
