Training is the foundation of any effective military force, and for the Puerto Rico State Guard (PRSG), it is no different. The exceptional responses by the Georgia State Defense Force, South Carolina State Guard, and Virginia Defense Force to the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton underscore the critical role that rigorous, year-round training plays in maintaining a highly capable and ready force. The ability to respond swiftly and efficiently during such emergencies is the result of consistent training throughout the year. Both State Defense Forces and National Guard troops participate in joint exercises designed to ensure they are always ready when the call comes. This year-round training is crucial for maintaining operational readiness and ensuring that soldiers can act decisively in times of crisis. Following this principle, the 900th Medical Command of the Puerto Rico State Guard (State Defense For recently completed its annual training—a week-long exercise designed to refresh soldiers and airmen on essential emergency response skills such as CPR, Stop the Bleed training, and Mobile Hospital setup. This ensures that PRSG members are always ready to serve when their island needs them the most.
From October 2nd to 6th, 2024, at the Camp Santiago Joint Training Center (CSJTC) in Salinas, Puerto Rico, the annual training (AT-24) for members of the 900th Medical Command was held. This period was used to evaluate and validate all courses conducted during the fiscal year 2024 (FY-24), ensuring that the training objectives had been met. The comprehensive training program included critical lifesaving skills such as the Stop the Bleed course, Mobile Hospital Training (DLX), and an introduction to the Pre-Hospital Emergency Response Team (HERT). Airmen were trained in airway management, shock management, and patient transfer to safety, with practical field triage scenarios that simulated real-life emergency situations. These exercises are designed to ensure that PRSG soldiers are prepared to provide medical support in any environment, especially during disaster relief operations. The combination of medical and operational training equips the 900th Medical Command to act effectively and save lives when disasters strike Puerto Rico, ensuring that the island has a capable and ready force to support its citizens in times of crisis.
