As One Class Graduates, Another Begins: New Recruits Begin Rigorous MEPS Process

A few weeks ago, The Puerto Rico State Guard (State Defense Force) proudly graduated a new class of recruits from Initial Entry Training, also known as Basic Training. Now, a fresh group of applicants has taken their first steps towards military service by going through the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) process at Camp Santiago.

The Puerto Rico State Guard’s MEPS program is structured to guarantee that all incoming recruits satisfy rigorous medical, physical, mental, and legal standards, while successfully completing a thorough background screening. This initiative highlights the State Guard’s dedication to upholding elevated levels of health and preparedness among its personnel. Closely modeled after the U.S. Military’s MEPS framework, The Puerto Rico State Guard’s version serves as a comprehensive entry point, where applicants undergo a series of assessments conducted by the Guard’s medical staff, ensuring they meet the necessary criteria for military service.

Across the United States, numerous State Defense Forces have recently embraced similar recruitment processes, aligning with the U.S. Military’s MEPS system. This alignment creates a standardized pathway for processing new recruits into State Defense Forces, reinforcing high standards of fitness and readiness. This strategy not only ensures that State Defense Force members are aligned with their counterparts in the U.S. Armed Forces but also offers a structured and unified onboarding experience for recruits. The Puerto Rico State Guard’s MEPS program is a prime example of this broader commitment to excellence and operational readiness within state military forces across the nation.

On Saturday, October 19, 2024 soldiers of the Recruitment Detachment of the State Command of the Puerto Rico National Guard participated in the MEPS process in Camp Santiago. The Recruitment Detachment has as a mission to recruit honorable citizens who are willing and able to support the Puerto Rico National Guard, as well as federal, state and local agencies in times of emergency. Our recruiters are vital to ensure that all new recruits pass through the Military Entry Pre-Processing Station (MEPS) for their qualification prior to entering basic training. We appreciate and value the work and effort of all our recruiters, especially SFC (PR) Naphtali Rodriguez and SSG (PR) Benjamin Albino, for their unconditional support for the welfare of the State Command.
