On National STEM Day, the California State Guard proudly announced an inspiring addition to its ranks: Dr. Yvonne Cagle, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, NASA astronaut, physician, researcher, and recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award (Gold). Joining as a Brigadier General (CA), Dr. Cagle will serve as an ambassador and mentor to the California National Guard’s Youth Programs. Her mission is to inspire young minds, particularly those in underrepresented communities, to explore opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Through her leadership, she will engage with programs such as the Sunburst Youth Challenge Academy, Grizzly Youth Academy, Discovery Challenge Academy, California Military Institute, Porterville Military Academy, Oakland Military Institute (OMI), California Cadet Corps, and STARBASE—a hands-on STEAM initiative for fifth graders.
These programs are designed to provide every student with the tools, resources, and encouragement to excel academically and personally. By introducing students to STEAM fields, the programs aim to spark curiosity, foster creativity, and build critical thinking skills that prepare participants for future challenges. Through mentorship and immersive activities, students are motivated to explore their passions, set ambitious goals, and realize their full potential. Dr. Cagle’s unparalleled experience and passion for discovery will enhance these efforts, inspiring young people to aim high and consider opportunities in science, technology, and beyond. “I’m always one who is about discovery … to reach out to our next generation of youth explorers and leaders,” Dr. Cagle shared, emphasizing her commitment to guiding students toward success.
These youth programs play a vital role in shaping California’s future leaders. By fostering academic growth, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, the programs not only help participants improve their grades but also steer them toward productive and meaningful paths in life. These initiatives provide mentorship, structure, and encouragement, helping keep kids and teens focused on achieving their potential. With the addition of Dr. Cagle’s inspiring leadership, the California State Guard’s youth initiatives are set to make an even greater impact, guiding participants to excel academically and become pioneers in their chosen fields.
