California Wildfires: The United Efforts of The National Guard, State Guard, CAL FIRE To Subdue The Blaze

As California is facing another devastating wildfire season, high winds across Los Angeles and Ventura counties have exacerbated already dire conditions. Forecasters have issued extreme fire warnings, describing the danger as “about as bad as it gets.” Gusts reaching up to 70 miles per hour are expected to peak between Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon, posing a severe threat to containment efforts and increasing the risk of new fires.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has placed large swaths of southwest California under red flag warnings, with certain areas designated as being in a “particularly dangerous situation” (PDS)—the most extreme fire weather classification. These conditions have fueled rapid fire growth across four active fires: the Palisades and Eaton fires, which have collectively burned over 37,800 acres; the Hurst Fire, nearly fully contained after scorching 800 acres; and the newly ignited Auto Fire in Ventura County, which has burned 56 acres. The ongoing fires have led to 24 fire-related deaths and forced hundreds of thousands of residents to evacuate their homes.

In response to the crisis, Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order to accelerate recovery efforts by suspending permitting and review requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the Coastal Act. The order also extends protections against price gouging for essential goods and services. “The men and women of the California National Guard are working day and night to help Los Angeles residents during their greatest time of need,” Governor Newsom said, noting the addition of more of California National Guard & State Guard (State Defense Force) troops to aid firefighting and public safety operations.

Among the forces combating these catastrophic blazes is Task Force Rattlesnake, a joint effort composed of The California National Guard, the California State Guard, and CAL FIRE. Task Force Rattlesnake exemplifies interagency collaboration, uniting thousands of trained firefighting personnel in the fight against California’s wildfires. Members of the task force, including both soldiers and firefighters, all don the same uniform—yellow helmets, jackets, and green pants— to encourage the ‘One Team, One Fight’.

Deployed across wildfire hotspots, Military & Civilian responders provide critical hand crews, aviation support, and logistical resources to supplement firefighting operations. These efforts are part of California’s broader mobilization, which includes over 1,150 fire engines, 60 aircraft, and numerous dozers and water tenders. Working side by side, the California National Guard, State Guard (State Defense Force), CalFire and many other agencies, which include those from other states and countries, are not only extinguishing flames but also protecting communities, enforcing evacuation orders, and ensuring public safety.

As the fires rage on, the bravery and resilience of the men and women on the front lines stand as a testament to California’s commitment to combating the destructive force of wildfires and rebuilding stronger for the future.
