On February 8, 2025, the Puerto Rico State Guard (State Defense Force – PRSG) Medical Command, conducted a rigorous screening process for 35 new recruits at the Joint Training Center Camp Santiago (CSJTC) in Salinas. This thorough evaluation ensured that each candidate met the high standards required for military service before officially joining the ranks of the PRSG.

The selection process included medical examinations, physical fitness tests, administrative screenings. Criminal background checks were also conducted to verify that recruits met the ethical and legal standards expected of those who serve in the Puerto Rico State Guard. These checks help ensure that only individuals with integrity and a strong commitment to duty are entrusted with the responsibilities of state military service.

Medical Command personnel carefully reviewed each recruit’s medical history and overall physical condition to confirm their readiness for service. These medical evaluations were critical in ensuring that each recruit could meet the physical and mental demands of military duty. The physical fitness tests measured endurance, strength, and agility—key attributes required for effective service within the PRSG.
After successfully completing all the processes and steps of the Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS), including medical evaluations, fitness tests, administrative screenings, and criminal background checks, the recruits officially transitioned into service by taking the Oath of Enlistment or Commission. This solemn ceremony marks the beginning of their military journey, as they pledge their loyalty and dedication to the Puerto Rico State Guard and commit to serving the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico with honor and integrity. By reciting the oath, these new service members affirm their duty to support and defend their state, uphold the mission of the PRSG, and carry out their responsibilities with unwavering commitment. This milestone solidifies their place within the force, allowing them to move forward into the next phase of their training and service.

The next phase of their recruitment process is Initial Entry Training (IET – Basic Training), a rigorous program designed to equip recruits with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for military service. For those who are not prior-service members of the U.S. military, IET is a mandatory requirement to ensure they are prepared for the demands of military life.
Modeled closely after the U.S. Army’s Basic Training, this demanding course introduces recruits to essential military concepts, discipline, and operational readiness. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including physical fitness, drill and ceremony, military customs and courtesies, and basic first aid. These elements foster a sense of order and preparedness, ensuring that recruits can respond effectively in various operational scenarios. Physical conditioning is critical for endurance and resilience, while drill and ceremony emphasize precision and teamwork—both vital in military operations.
Recruits also undergo training in military equipment handling, map reading, and land navigation, essential skills for safety and operational effectiveness in the field. Understanding the chain of command and military law is another crucial aspect of training, ensuring recruits can function within the structured hierarchy of the Puerto Rico State Guard while adhering to ethical and legal standards.
Above all, leadership, integrity, and teamwork are core values instilled throughout IET. These principles help forge a cohesive, disciplined unit where trust, reliability, and professionalism are paramount. This foundational training not only prepares recruits for the physical and mental demands of military service but also equips them to navigate the responsibilities and challenges they will encounter as members of the Puerto Rico State Guard.
The Puerto Rico National Guard and State Guard leadership extended their congratulations to these new service members, officially welcoming them into the Puerto Rico Military family. As they embark on this honorable journey, they take on the responsibility of upholding the core values of duty, integrity, and excellence, ensuring that they serve their fellow citizens with honor.
At StateDefenseForce.com, we proudly welcome and thank these new service members for their decision to serve their community, and nation.
