SDF Poll 2

Poll – Where Do You Think SGAUS Should Focus Its Lobbying Efforts The Most? The Federal or State Level

In our latest Commanders Briefing interview, we spoke with Lt. Colonel Barry Greene of the State Guard Association of the United States (SGAUS) about their ongoing efforts to lobby for State Defense Forces at both the state and federal levels.

We’d like to hear your thoughts: Where do you believe lobbying efforts should be prioritized—within the U.S. Congress or at the state level?

Each approach comes with its own advantages and challenges. Increased federal lobbying could enhance collaboration between State Defense Forces and the U.S. military through Joint Task Force missions. It could also open the door for SDFs to gain access to federal equipment, attend U.S. military schools, and purchase surplus military gear.

On the state level, stronger lobbying efforts could lead to direct benefits for SDF troops, such as pay for basic training and monthly drill weekends. It could also result in expanded state benefits, including retirement plans, access to state medical programs, and even pensions for long-serving members. Additionally, increased advocacy at the state level might encourage the creation of new State Defense Forces in states that currently lack them.

We want your feedback—where do you think SGAUS should focus its lobbying efforts the most? Let us know your thoughts!
