We are proud to announce that our next Commanders Briefing will take place on Wednesday, May 14th, at 7:00 p.m. CST, featuring an exclusive interview with Major General Roger O. Sheridan, the newly appointed Commanding General of the Texas State Guard.
Appointed by Governor Greg Abbott earlier this year, Major General Sheridan steps into this critical leadership role with a distinguished career spanning over two decades in the United States Marine Corps. A decorated combat veteran, he has served in some of the most pivotal military operations of our time, including Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Restore Hope. Governor Abbott praised his appointment, stating: “Major General Roger O. Sheridan’s decades of selfless sacrifice and service to his country makes him the perfect individual to lead the Texas State Guard.”
Major General Sheridan joined the Texas State Guard (State Defense Force) in 2012 and has since been instrumental in shaping its mission, training standards, and overall readiness. Most recently, he commanded the 6th Brigade, where his steadfast leadership earned him recognition across the organization. Beyond his military service, Major General Sheridan holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Sam Houston State University and currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Brazos Valley Council of Governments—further evidence of his commitment to public service and the well-being of Texas communities.
This Commanders Briefing will provide a unique opportunity to hear directly from Major General Sheridan as he outlines his vision for the future of the Texas State Guard, including priorities for training, operational growth, and strengthening partnerships with the Texas Military Department and local agencies.
This session also marks the first Commanders Briefing to feature Texas State Guard leadership following the recent retirement of Major General Anthony Woods, whose exceptional tenure oversaw the Guard’s dramatic expansion in size, capability, and mission set—including its pivotal role in Operation Lone Star and disaster response missions statewide. With nearly 2,000 troops—hundreds of whom serve on State Active Duty—The Texas State Guard remains the largest and most operationally engaged State Guard in the nation.
