The Texas State Guard (State Defense Force – TXSG) has officially welcomed its new Commanding General, Major General Roger O. Sheridan, who brings decades of service and experience from the United States Marine Corps. In his first message to the force, Sheridan expressed his deep honor in leading the TXSG and emphasized his commitment to maintaining the organization’s reputation as “the nation’s premier state defense force.” He acknowledged the dedication and professionalism of the Texas State Guard’s service members, stressing that leadership is found at all levels, not just in rank. With a focus on training, technological advancements, and operational readiness, Sheridan assured the force that while change is inevitable, the core values of integrity, professionalism, and selfless service will remain steadfast. Reflecting on the TXSG’s 84-year history, he reaffirmed the guard’s readiness for future challenges, stating, “Let’s be ready. Let’s be ‘Equal to the Task’—and then some.”
Here is The Commanding Generals Full Message:

The change of command ceremony took place at Camp Mabry on February 23, marking the transition from Major General Anthony Woods to Major General Sheridan. The event was attended by state lawmakers, members of both Sheridan and Woods’ families, and Texas State Guard personnel from across the state. Governor Greg Abbott, who appointed Sheridan as the 22nd Commanding General of the modern TXSG, praised his service and leadership, saying he is confident that Sheridan will “further professionalize the nation’s premier state defense force.” Prior to taking command, Sheridan served as the Commander of the 6th Brigade and as Deputy Director of the Brazos Valley Council of Governments. A Marine Corps veteran with more than 21 years of active and reserve service, he deployed in support of Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Restore Hope. His extensive experience in both federal and state service positions him well to lead the Texas State Guard into the future.
Texas State Guard Says Goodbye to Former Commander:

Major General Anthony Woods leaves behind a lasting legacy of professionalism, readiness, and unwavering service to Texas. Over his three-year tenure, he prioritized operational deployments, professional development, and soldier welfare. Under his leadership, the TXSG contributed more than 563,000 operational man-days to missions including Operation Lone Star, hurricane response, wildfire relief, and border security operations. Woods implemented a strategic recruitment and retention plan, ensuring that the guard remained strong and well-equipped for future challenges. A combat veteran of the U.S. Army, Woods’ leadership extended beyond Texas, having played key roles in Operation Noble Eagle after 9/11, border security initiatives, and military mentoring in Afghanistan. His dedication to both military and law enforcement service, including his work with the DEA and the Dallas Police Department, further exemplifies his commitment to protecting and serving. As he steps down, the Texas State Guard stands stronger, more capable, and more prepared than ever, thanks to his leadership and vision.
