On March 17th, continuing their proud tradition, members of The New York Guard’s (State Defense Force) 88th Area Command joined thousands of participants for New York City’s iconic St. Patrick’s Day Parade, an annual event whose origins date back to 1762. Each year, the 88th Area Command—formerly known as the 88th Brigade—is warmly welcomed to march, celebrating their deep historical ties to the Irish-American community.
This year, soldiers from the 88th Area Command stepped off promptly at 12:15 PM EST from their designated starting point at Madison Avenue and Vanderbilt Avenue, marching alongside the Friends of Ireland, another esteemed participant group dedicated to preserving and celebrating Irish heritage.
Originally designated as the 88th Brigade, the 88th Area Command proudly traces its lineage to the famed 88th New York Infantry, commonly known as part of the Irish Brigade during the American Civil War. Formed exclusively of Irish-American soldiers, this storied regiment fought valiantly under the command of legendary Colonel Thomas F. Meagher, whose courageous leadership became symbolic of Irish-American pride and sacrifice.
Today, the New York Guard proudly carries forward that historical legacy, representing both service and community spirit. Participation in this celebrated event highlights their commitment to heritage, camaraderie, and service to New York State.
