On June 14, 2025, the United States Army marks a monumental milestone—250 years of defending the nation and preserving the freedoms we hold dear. This day stands as a tribute to the generations of Soldiers who have stood in harm’s way, protecting the values of liberty, justice, and democracy for all Americans.
The U.S. Army was officially established by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, predating the Declaration of Independence by more than a year. Recognizing the urgent need for a unified colonial force to stand against the British Crown, Congress authorized the enlistment of expert riflemen to serve under the command of George Washington, who was appointed Commander-in-Chief shortly thereafter. This historic act laid the foundation for what would become the most powerful and capable land force the world has ever known.
Over the last two and a half centuries, the Army has been central to every defining moment in our nation’s history. In the Revolutionary War, Soldiers faced the overwhelming might of the British Empire and secured America’s independence. During the Civil War, they fought not only to preserve the Union but to bring about a new birth of freedom. In World War I and World War II, the Army played pivotal roles in turning the tide of global conflict and standing up to tyranny on an unprecedented scale.
The Army’s courage and commitment continued in Korea and Vietnam, as Soldiers confronted new kinds of warfare in defense of democratic ideals. Following the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001, the U.S. Army once again answered the call—leading the global War on Terror across Afghanistan and Iraq. These modern campaigns challenged Soldiers not just in conventional battles but in the complex fight against extremism and for regional stability.
Each victory and each challenge throughout Army history has been made possible by the brave men and women who wear the uniform. Without their service, the United States of America as we know it would not exist. Our way of life—raising families, pursuing dreams, and living freely—would be little more than a distant memory.
Liberty, justice, and freedom are not guaranteed—they are preserved by those willing to sacrifice everything. These Soldiers have dedicated their lives to ensuring that each of us can enjoy the privileges of living in America: the joy of a summer day, the laughter of children, the dignity of free speech, and the boundless possibilities of the American Dream.
As we celebrate the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday, we honor not only its history but its future. Today’s Army remains ready to meet the evolving challenges of the 21st century, committed to defending the Constitution, safeguarding our nation, and protecting freedom wherever it is threatened.
Happy 250th Birthday, United States Army. We thank you. We honor you. We remember that freedom is not free—it is earned every day by those who serve. We are indebted to you for everything you do.
