“Nothing Is as Strong as the Heart of a Volunteer”: SC State Guard Assists During Federal Shutdown

Government shutdowns are a time of stress and uncertainty for Americans. While leaders in Washington work toward a resolution, State Defense Forces have stepped forward to support those most affected. The situation is particularly challenging for service members of the United States military and other essential federal personnel, who must continue performing their vital duties. These men and women work day and night to defend our freedoms, safeguard our nation, and keep critical services functioning. Their commitment reflects the depth of sacrifice our service members make not only in times of peace and prosperity, but also in moments of challenge. This shows the amazing dedication and sacrifices our service members make during good times as well as difficult ones.

Recognizing this growing hardship, Governor Henry McMaster directed the South Carolina State Guard to step forward and assist communities most affected. In response, State Guard troops have begun emergency food distribution operations in Greenville and Columbia. Working alongside local officials, faith-based organizations, and community outreach programs, soldiers are helping ensure that families and federal employees facing delays in pay can still access food, supplies, and daily essentials. This mission is not only an act of service — it is a demonstration of solidarity with those who serve the nation, and a reminder that South Carolinians look out for one another when times are hard.

State Defense Forces across the nation embody this same spirit of service. They train every month to prepare for emergency response missions, assist their state during natural disasters, and augment the National Guard in both training and operational deployments. Many also participate in high-profile joint missions, including efforts like Operation Lone Star, which require advanced coordination and sustained commitment. Nearly all of this service is volunteer. These soldiers give up time with family, juggle commitments with their civilian careers, and shoulder rigorous training requirements — and yet they still go further, stepping into their communities to provide support wherever it is needed. Their dedication reflects a simple but enduring truth, best captured by General Jimmy Doolittle: “Nothing is as strong as the heart of a volunteer.”
