State Defense Force Troops Support Memorial Day Observances Nationwide

Every Memorial Day, Americans pause to honor those who gave “the last full measure of devotion” in service to this great nation. Across the country, State Defense Forces / State Guards stood beside veterans, military families, public officials, and local communities to remember the men and women who defended the United States and the institutions of freedom that generations of Americans have inherited.

Memorial Day is not simply a long weekend or the unofficial beginning of summer. It is a solemn national observance dedicated to those who never came home. It is a day to remember the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians, and Coast Guardsmen who placed duty above self, who answered the call of their nation, and who ultimately gave their lives in defense of the freedoms Americans enjoy today.

State Defense Force troops throughout the nation helped carry that remembrance forward. Whether standing watch at a cemetery, assisting with security and traffic control, supporting a formal ceremony, or joining their fellow service members in reflection, these troops demonstrated that service to state and nation includes preserving the memory of those who sacrificed everything.

In Georgia, Soldiers of The Georgia State Defense Force played an active role in several Memorial Day observances. In Marietta, Georgia State Defense Force Soldiers from GFAB North supported the 80th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Marietta National Cemetery on May 25, 2026. Alongside veterans, community members, and fellow service members, GSDF Soldiers gathered to honor the memory and sacrifice of more than 18,000 heroes laid to rest there. Their presence helped underscore the solemn meaning of the day and the enduring bond between those who serve today and those who gave their lives in defense of the nation.

Georgia State Defense Force Soldiers also supported the annual Silent Tribute Memorial Day observance at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton on May 23, 2026. During the observance, GSDF personnel provided entry control, traffic management, crowd control, and a safety and security presence as families, veterans, and citizens gathered to honor the fallen. The annual Memorial Day program and Silent Tribute at Georgia National Cemetery includes the placement of flags on every gravesite, followed by a formal mourning ceremony and the playing of “Taps,” one of the most powerful and solemn traditions in American military remembrance.

The Georgia State Defense Force was also represented at the State Capitol in Atlanta during the Memorial Day Ceremony held on May 21, 2026. Members of the Georgia General Assembly and senior leaders of the Georgia Department of Defense stood together in the Capitol to honor the fallen. Among those present were Senator Chuck Payne, Georgia State Defense Force Major Kay Kirkpatrick, who also serves as a Georgia State Senator, Georgia National Guard Command Sergeant Major Clint Cowser, Georgia State Defense Force Command Sergeant Major Mike Ramos, and Representative Josh Bonner, a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Their presence reflected the close relationship between Georgia’s military forces, state leadership, and public institutions in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In Texas, Major General Roger O. Sheridan, Commanding General of The Texas State Guard (State Defense Force), issued a Memorial Day message reminding the force that the holiday is a solemn reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by generations of Americans who answered the call to serve something greater than themselves. He emphasized that every member of the military understands that service carries sacrifice, from families enduring separation to service members placing duty before comfort and standing in harm’s way to defend their fellow citizens, communities, and the ideals of the nation.

General Sheridan also tied the meaning of Memorial Day to the ongoing mission of The Texas State Guard. While the Texas State Guard’s missions focus on supporting the people of Texas during disasters, emergencies, and times of need, he reminded its members that they remain part of a proud military tradition rooted in duty, sacrifice, and service to others. He called on Texas Guard Service Members to honor the fallen not only through remembrance, but through professionalism, compassion, readiness, and commitment to their fellow Texans and to the nation.

In Vermont, The Vermont State Guard (State Defense Force) paused to honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation. Leadership reminded its members and the public that Memorial Day is more than a long weekend, it is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom and the courage of those who stood in defense of it. The Vermont State Guard also expressed support for the families who continue to carry the weight of loss, recognizing that their loved ones’ sacrifices were made on behalf of all Americans.

Members of The Vermont State Guard also assisted with force protection at Camp Johnson, providing on-base security while The Vermont Army National Guard held its annual Memorial Day ceremony. The Vermont State Guard supports this event each year, helping ensure that the ceremony can be conducted safely, respectfully, and with the solemn dignity the occasion requires.

In Connecticut, The Connecticut Governor’s Guards continued their historic tradition of public service and remembrance. The Connecticut Governor’s Guards, which is composed of the 1st and 2nd Company Governor’s Foot Guards and the 1st and 2nd Company Governor’s Horse Guards. These historic formations participated in events throughout Connecticut, helping communities honor the fallen during Memorial Day observances across the state.

The 2nd Company Governor’s Foot Guard Memorial Day events included the North Haven Memorial Day Parade on May 23, 2026, and the Derby/Shelton Memorial Day Parade on May 25, 2026. These ceremonies and parades are part of a broader Connecticut tradition in which local communities gather at memorials, cemeteries, and town centers to remember those who died in service to the United States.

The participation of State Defense Forces in Memorial Day observances demonstrates an important truth: military service is not only about responding to emergencies, supporting civil authorities, or standing ready during disasters. It is also about preserving memory, honoring sacrifice, and reminding the public that freedom has always carried a cost.

From Georgia to Texas, Vermont to Connecticut, State Defense Force troops stood in formation, provided security, supported ceremonies, assisted communities, and helped ensure that the fallen were remembered with dignity. Their service on Memorial Day reflected the same values that define State Defense Forces throughout the year: duty, honor, readiness, and commitment to state and nation.

As Americans move forward from Memorial Day, the responsibility of remembrance must continue. The fallen cannot speak for themselves, but their legacy lives on through the families who remember them, the communities that honor them, and the service members who continue to stand watch. This Memorial Day, State Defense Forces across the nation helped ensure that the sacrifices of America’s fallen heroes were not forgotten.

Texas State Guard,

As we approach Memorial Day, we pause as a nation and as a military force to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to the United States. Memorial Day is more than a holiday or the beginning of summer; it is a solemn reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by generations of Americans who answered the call to serve something greater than themselves.

Every member of the military understands that service carries sacrifice. Families endure separation, service members place duty before comfort, and many willingly stand in harm’s way to defend their fellow citizens, their communities, and the ideals of this nation. Memorial Day honors those who gave everything in that service. Their courage, devotion, and selflessness form the foundation of the freedoms we enjoy today.

For the Texas State Guard, Memorial Day also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of service. While our missions focus on supporting the people of Texas during disasters, emergencies, and times of need, we remain part of a proud military tradition rooted in duty, sacrifice, and service to others. We stand alongside those who have worn the uniform before us and carry forward the values they defended.

As Texas Guard Service Members, we honor the fallen not only through remembrance but through how we serve today with professionalism, compassion, readiness, and commitment to our fellow Texans and our nation.

This Memorial Day, I ask each of you to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our fallen heroes and the families they have left behind. Their legacy lives on in our continued service and in our commitment to uphold the ideals they fought to protect.

I appreciate your dedication to the Texas State Guard, the Texas Military Department, the State of Texas, and our nation.

May we never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Respectfully,

Major General Roger O. Sheridan

Commanding General, Texas State Guard
