Texas State Guard’s 6th Brigade Faces Rigorous Training Weekend, Elevating Search & Rescue Expertise

The Texas State Guard’s (State Defense Force) 6th Brigade, had a significant weekend of training in March 2024, focusing on enhancing their capabilities in diverse search and rescue operations. On March 16, soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 6th Brigade, convened at Reveille Peak Ranch in Burnet, TX, for a specialized drill. Their maritime search and rescue (SAR) team, including Bravo Company divers, engaged in rigorous training exercises aimed at honing their proficiency in pre-dive safety assessments, underwater SAR skills, and maintaining surface safety awareness when divers are operational. This intensive training session underscores the brigade’s commitment to excellence when called for maritime SAR missions or maritime salvage and recovery missions, ensuring that the team is well-prepared to handle emergencies on water with the utmost efficiency and safety.

In parallel to the maritime drills, the 6th Brigade also concentrated on strengthening their land-based Search & Rescue (SAR) capabilities. During the same special troops drill at Reveille Peak Ranch, soldiers from Alpha Company focused on ground SARR skills, with a particular emphasis on understanding how weather and topography influence search and rescue missions. Under the guidance of CPT Greg Frebourg, a geologist, the team delved into analyzing the impact of rain and flooding on search areas, as well as how different terrains like mud, rock, and grass can affect the visibility and preservation of evidence. This comprehensive training ensures that the brigade’s personnel are adept at navigating and operating in varied environmental conditions, enhancing their effectiveness in land-based search and rescue operations.

The rigorous training undertaken by the 6th Brigade of the Texas State Guard underscores the vital role of search and rescue missions within the State Defense Forces and the State Guard. These operations are crucial not only in peacetime, assisting local and state authorities in locating missing individuals, but also during statewide emergencies. In such situations, the State Guard plays an indispensable role in evacuating and locating stranded individuals, transporting them to safety, and providing immediate medical care. The dedication of the 6th Brigade to their training and mission readiness reflects the broader commitment of State Defense Forces to safeguarding and assisting their communities in times of need.
