SDF Poll 2

Poll: Should State Defense Force Troops Share Billeting Quarters with National Guard Soldiers to Build Camaraderie?

State Defense Forces have been serving side by side with Army National Guard and Air National Guard units since their inception in 1917. While working together on these missions, soldiers have built strong camaraderie. Through shared experiences, National Guard soldiers gain a better understanding of what State Defense Forces do, why individuals choose to serve in them, and this often strengthens the long-term ranks of State Defense Forces—as many who serve in the National Guard eventually retire and join their State Defense Force to continue serving.

In the field, these soldiers serve shoulder to shoulder, performing the same missions—whether that be erecting fencing, conducting search and rescue operations, or providing medical triage—which helps develop those bonds. During meals, they sit and eat at the same tables and share the same food. However, in some states, when it comes time to sleep, State Defense Force soldiers are assigned to separate barracks. In states where State Defense Forces are billeted with the National Guard, we see greater interaction and camaraderie continue into off-duty hours. But when billeting is separated, there is noticeably less interaction between the two groups during downtime.

This week’s poll asks the question: Should State Defense Force troops share billeting and sleeping quarters with National Guard soldiers to build that camaraderie?

  • Yes – Shared billeting strengthens camaraderie, teamwork, and mission readiness.
  • No – Separate billeting maintains organizational distinctions.
