A Soldier On and Off Duty: South Carolina State Guard Officer Honored for Heroism

The South Carolina State Guard (State Defense Forces) recently recognized one of its own for extraordinary courage and decisive action that saved lives. First Lieutenant Frederic Parsons was awarded the Medal of Valor, one of the Guard’s highest honors, for his heroic efforts in rescuing two individuals from drowning in the swift, high waters of the Toe River on June 28, 2023.

On that day, 1LT Parsons witnessed two people trapped and in imminent danger as the river’s powerful current threatened to sweep them away. Without hesitation and fully aware of the personal risk, he acted swiftly and decisively. His quick thinking and unwavering determination ensured both individuals were pulled to safety, avoiding certain tragedy. It was a moment that exemplified the very spirit of the State Guard—courage in the face of danger and a willingness to sacrifice for the lives of others.

The recognition was personally presented by the Commanding General of the South Carolina State Guard, Major General Leon Lott. Such an honor from the Guard’s highest leader underscores the magnitude of 1LT Parsons’ actions and highlights the caliber of service members who volunteer their time and skills to the State Defense Forces. For these soldiers, service does not end when they remove their uniform; it is a lifelong commitment to protecting their communities and answering the call when others are in need.

Members of the State Defense Forces, including the South Carolina State Guard, join not for recognition or pay but for a greater purpose—to serve their state and country, to safeguard their communities, and to stand ready when emergencies strike. Whether responding to natural disasters, supporting first responders, or, as in this case, stepping into danger as private citizens, their devotion to saving lives is unwavering.

1LT Parsons’ act of heroism is more than a singular event; it is a reminder of the selfless character that defines the Guard’s soldiers. It shows that the courage and service instilled in them remain steadfast both on and off duty.

This is the spirit that guides the State Defense Forces: serving their community, their state, and their country—saving American lives.
