Texas State Guard Mobilized as Tropical Storm Alberto Hits Texas

Governor Greg Abbott today issued a disaster declaration for 51 Texas counties as Tropical Storm Alberto moves through the Gulf of Mexico, impacting the southern half of Texas. “As Tropical Storm Alberto moves through the Gulf Coast, I issued a severe weather disaster declaration for 51 counties to ensure Texans and at-risk regions have the resources and personnel needed to respond to this storm,” said Governor Abbott. The declaration covers a wide range of counties across South Texas, the Coastal Bend, and Southeast Texas. With heavy rainfall, tropical storm force winds, and coastal flooding expected, Texans are urged to stay weather aware and follow local guidance to ensure their safety.

In response to Tropical Storm Alberto, the Texas State Guard has been activated to assist multiple agencies in the relief effort. State Guard soldiers have been spotted at the Texas Division of Emergency Management command center, coordinating logistics and support operations. Additionally, other State Guard soldiers are expected to augment National Guard units and Search & Rescue teams during this operation. Their presence will bolster the state’s capacity to manage rescue missions, distribute supplies, and provide critical assistance to the affected communities, ensuring that Texans receive timely and effective help in the wake of the storm.

Governor Abbott Issues Disaster Declaration As Tropical Storm Alberto Impacts Texas

Governor Greg Abbott today issued a disaster declaration for 51 Texas counties as Tropical Storm Alberto moves through the Gulf of Mexico with impacts expected to continue across the southern half of Texas.

“As Tropical Storm Alberto moves through the Gulf Coast, I issued a severe weather disaster declaration for 51 counties to ensure Texans and at-risk regions have the resources and personnel needed to respond to this storm,” said Governor Abbott. “Texas is working closely with local officials and emergency response personnel to swiftly deploy all necessary assistance as heavy rainfall, tropical storm force winds, and coastal flooding impact communities in South Texas and the Coastal Bend. I urge Texans in at risk-areas to remain weather aware and heed the guidance of state and local officials to keep themselves and their families safe.”

Counties in the Governor’s declaration include: Aransas, Atascosa, Bandera, Bee, Bexar, Brazoria, Brooks, Calhoun, Cameron, Chambers, DeWitt, Dimmit, Duval, Edwards, Fort Bend, Frio, Galveston, Goliad, Gonzales, Harris, Hidalgo, Jackson, Jefferson, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Karnes, Kenedy, Kinney, Kleberg, LaSalle, Lavaca, Live Oak, Matagorda, Maverick, McMullen, Medina, Nueces, Orange, Real, Refugio, San Patricio, Starr, Uvalde, Val Verde, Victoria, Webb, Wharton, Willacy, Wilson, Zapata, and Zavala counties. Additional counties may be added as conditions warrant.

According to the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Alberto is forecast to bring heavy rainfall and tropical storm force winds to South Texas, the Coastal Bend, and Southeast Texas. Tropical Storm Alberto is expected to cause ongoing coastal flooding along much of the Texas coast through the week.

Texans are urged to remain weather aware and monitor local forecast information as impacts from Tropical Storm Alberto reach the state. Texans can locate resources for individuals and families at tdem.texas.gov/disasters/alberto, including safety information, flooding resources, and road conditions.

 


Governor Abbott Activates State Emergency Response Resources Ahead Of Tropical Weather Threat

Governor Greg Abbott today directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources ahead of tropical weather activity in the Gulf of Mexico that will begin to impact the state this week.

“Texas stands ready to deploy all resources and assistance needed to help support communities in Southeast Texas that are in the path of a potentially devastating tropical storm,” said Governor Abbott. “I urge Texans to remain weather aware and heed the guidance of local officials to keep themselves and their families safe. Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

According to the National Weather Service, the Gulf of Mexico is being monitored for potential tropical development over the next several days. Threats of heavy rainfall and flooding are expected to intensify beginning Tuesday evening. Large areas of the state may be impacted, including South Texas and the Coastal Bend stretching toward Southeast Texas.

At the Governor’s direction, TDEM has activated the following state emergency response resources to support tropical weather response operations:

  • Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 2): Urban Search & Rescue Teams and Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads
  • Texas National Guard: Ground Transportation Platoons with high profile vehicles, helicopters with hoist capability
  • Texas Parks and Wildlife Department: Game Warden search and rescue boat teams
  • Texas Department of Public Safety: Tactical Marine Unit boats and rescue swimmers, search and rescue aircraft with hoist capability
  • Texas Department of Transportation: High profile vehicles and personnel monitoring road conditions
  • Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force): Severe Weather Packages

The following state emergency response resources have been readied by TDEM for mobilization as conditions warrant:

  • Texas A&M Forest Service: Incident Management Teams and saw crews
  • Public Utility Commission of Texas: Power outage monitoring and coordination with utility providers
  • Railroad Commission of Texas: Monitoring of the state’s natural gas supply and communication with the oil and gas industry
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality: Air/water/wastewater monitoring

Activates Additional State Resources Ahead Of Tropical Weather Impacts To Texas

 Governor Greg Abbott announced today that he directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to increase the readiness level of the Texas State Emergency Operations Center to Level II (Escalated Response Conditions) to begin 24-hour operations ahead of tropical weather hazards expected to impact the state today.

“As we prepare for severe tropical weather, Texas is activating all personnel and resources needed to support Texans and communities that will be potentially impacted by excessive rain and flooding,” said Governor Abbott. “To ensure assistance and resources are quickly deployed, I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to increase the readiness level of the State Emergency Operations Center. Texans in at-risk areas are urged to remain vigilant, monitor weather conditions, and take necessary precautions to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.”

This tropical system, according to the National Weather Service, is expected to further develop and cause potentially-dangerous rainfall and flooding across large areas of the state. The areas of concern include South Texas, the Coastal Bend, and Southeast Texas.

At the Governor’s direction, TDEM requested the following Texas Emergency Management Council agencies report to the Texas State Emergency Operations Center and ensure their resources are ready to deploy as needed:

At the Governor’s direction, TDEM has activated the following additional state emergency response resources to support local officials’ tropical weather response operations:

  • Texas A&M Forest Service: 4 Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System Strike Teams comprised of 100 personnel and 24 vehicles
  • Texas National Guard: 3 Ground Transportation Platoons comprised of more than 40 personnel and 20 vehicles; CH47 Chinook helicopters
