SGAUS President Discusses New National Guard Bureau Uniform Policy for State Defense Forces

In the latest Commanders Briefing clip, we sit down with Lt. Colonel (MD) Barry Greene, President of the State Guard Association of the United States (SGAUS), to discuss SGAUS’s view on the National Guard Bureau’s updated directive on State Defense Force uniforms.

The National Guard Bureau’s new and updated policy, CNGBI 5500.01, recommends that all State Defense Forces transition from the traditional Army camouflage uniform to one that features red nametapes, red insignia, a red ball cap, and a red shoulder patch with “SDF” in white lettering to clearly distinguish them from National Guard personnel.

In this clip, Lt. Col. Greene shares his perspective, expressing agreement with certain elements while questioning others, ultimately acknowledging that the decision rests with each state. He views the guidance as a positive step forward, emphasizing his gratitude to the National Guard Bureau for addressing the issue and providing a foundation for further refinement.
