This State Defense Force Original Article examines the heroic and largely untold role of the Texas State Guard during the catastrophic Texas City Disaster of April 16 – 17, 1947, one of the deadliest industrial accidents in American history. As explosions from the SS Grandcamp and SS High Flyer devastated the waterfront, which unfortunately killed hundreds, and plunged the city into chaos, nearly 1,800 Texas State Guard personnel were mobilized under martial law to restore order, secure perimeters, assist in rescue and recovery operations, and support overwhelmed civil authorities
