The summer has been a fast-moving, high-tempo stretch for the Maryland Defense Force (MDDF), marked by back-to-back training and recognition events across May and June. At the heart of this momentum is the historic 10th Medical Regiment—long a cornerstone of MDDF capability and the first State Defense Force unit to deploy outside the United States on a medical and humanitarian mission alongside the Maryland Air National Guard in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
May’s drill weekend showcased the MDDF’s blend of fitness, clinical expertise, and soldier development. Members began with annual physical fitness testing before the 10th Medical Regiment led a well-attended health fair that delivered education, informal checkups, and resources, with the Chaplain Corps and behavioral health teams underscoring a whole-person approach to readiness. Meanwhile, Spring Initial Entry Training continued overnight, as recruits and instructors honed hands-on Basic Life Support skills to standard.
The Maryland Defense Force’s Initial Entry Training (IET), modeled on U.S. Army basic training, provides a comprehensive introduction to service within the Maryland Military Department. New recruits progress through an in-depth curriculum emphasizing discipline, physical fitness, drill and ceremony, military customs and courtesies, and basic first aid. Instruction in equipment familiarization, map reading, and land navigation builds operational readiness and field safety. The program instills core values—leadership, integrity, and teamwork—to foster a cohesive unit built on trust and reliability. Demanding yet rewarding, IET equips MDDF recruits with the resilience and skills essential for success, laying a strong foundation for future contributions in support of Marylanders and the Maryland National Guard.
June kept the pace. At the 7 June drill, TAG coins recognized standout achievement across the formation: LTC Harold Bailey and CPT Chris Burt for earning the Professional Certification in Emergency Management; SSG Joshua Dunn as Soldier of the Year; and CPT Thomas Morgan and SGT Emily Green for completing the Norwegian Ruck March. The MDDF Band was also commended for a series of notable performances that represented the force with professionalism statewide. That same day, MDDF volunteers LTC John Green and CPT David McCarthy were honored for their service to the Joint Staff by Brig. Gen. Craig M. Hunter, Director of the Joint Staff of The Maryland Army National Guard—another example of how MDDF professionals integrate seamlessly within the Maryland Military Department.
Woven through these milestones is the enduring example of the 10th Medical Regiment. From leading community health outreach at home to its singular place in State Defense Force history for international humanitarian service, the regiment embodies the MDDF’s core mission: competent, professional support that strengthens the Guard, serves Marylanders, and builds resilience before crises ever strike.
As summer continues, May and June reaffirm a simple truth about the MDDF: fitness, skills, and service compound—one drill, one qualification, and one mission at a time.
The May drill weekend was a whirlwind at the MDDF, showcasing the commitment and camaraderie that makes our organization so special! Some members started the day with annual physical fitness tests – a great way to challenge ourselves and stay in shape.
Then, the 10th Medical Regiment led an incredible health fair, providing valuable education, check-ups, & resources for the members. Thanks to the Chaplain Corps & behavioral health services for their support as well. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow members, sharing experiences and building bonds.
In addition, our Spring IET’s overnight training continued, with recruits & dedicated instructors demonstrating hands-on Basic Life Support skills. A huge thank you to everyone who dedicated their time & expertise to make the weekend a success! We’re so proud of our MDDF community!
