Virginia Defense Force Holds State Wide Hurricane Response Exercise

The Virginia Defense Force (VDF) recently conducted a large scale hurricane response exercise called “Spring Winds 2023”. This exercise took place across eight different locations in the state. It aimed to enhance technical skills at both the individual and company levels while fostering the development of small unit leadership skills. Incorporating organic communications and access control capabilities, the scenario provided an opportunity for VDF members to refine their abilities in handling hurricane situations.

The scenario involved simulating a hurricane situation while integrating communications and access control capabilities. To ensure the exercise’s effectiveness, leaders from VDF’s Force Headquarters, 1st Regiment, and Support Operations Group visited the training locations, using evaluation checklists to provide valuable feedback and guidance to unit leaders, facilitating continuous improvement and learning throughout the exercise.

To show support and energize the soldiers, The Adjutant General of Virginia, Major General Timothy P. Williams made a surprise visit during the operation. He was briefed on the exercise, observed the training and spoke with soldiers, he even handed out a few challenge coins. Major General Williams is a big supporter of The Virginia Defense Force and the organization has only but grown during his time as Adjutant General.
