The Maryland Defense Force (State Defense Force) recently assisted the Maryland National Guard during a Veteran Vaccination mission.

MARYLAND DEFENSE FORCE VOLUNTEERS ASSIST WITH VETERANS’ VACCINATIONS
Members of the Maryland Defense Force provided support to ensure veterans received their Covid-19 vaccination shots
Weekends have been busy for several members of the Maryland Defense Force, the state guard that supports the State and the citizens of Maryland. On almost every Saturday and Sunday from February 20th through May 1, 2021, members of the Maryland Defense Force were on duty to assist in the process of providing Covid-19 vaccinations for veterans at the Veterans Administration Hospital on Greene Street in downtown Baltimore. More than ten thousand veterans received vaccinations during these weekend clinics.
The cafeteria was set up on weekends as a makeshift vaccination and observation area. Members of the Maryland Defense Force directed veterans through the hospital to specific stations to complete the paperwork and to receive their vaccination shots. When they arrived in the cafeteria veterans would receive their vaccination shots, which were given by VA Hospital staff, Maryland National Guard medics and doctors and nurses from 10th Medical Regiment of the Maryland Defense Force.
Most veterans were pleased to see Maryland Defense Force personnel in uniform guiding them through the VA Hospital hallways. This uniform presence brought several to reminisce of their own days of service to our nation when they were in uniform. Many said this put them at ease as they were about to receive their shots and it put them in a familiar military environment.
The VA Maryland Health Care System is administering the Covid-19 vaccine to all enrolled Veteran patients, regardless of their age. To schedule an appointment to receive the vaccination, call their Covid-19 Vaccine Appointment Line at 410-605-7740, Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Maryland Defense Force is the State’s uniformed volunteer military unit providing professional and technical assistance to the Maryland Military Department. Established in 1917, the MDDF consists of over 170 personnel who perform legal, engineering, finance, medical, chaplain, field support and ceremonial services for the State of Maryland.
