One of The Legacy Missions handed down from the early days of The State Defense Forces is The Military Police mission. This mission had State Defense Forces train and certify as Military Police Officers. Their missions ranged from assisting City & State Police Forces to being deployed in suppressing riots during World War II. However the need for such units has significantly decreased since then as The National Guard fulfills this role with better equipped soldiers.
State Defense Forces do still provide their soldiers with Internal Security training. Such training is very useful during Shelter Management operations. It provides soldiers with the basics of security operations, such as keeping a building or facility secure, securing access points, and ensuring the safety of evacuees and rescue workers.
Some State Defense Forces do still retain The Military Police units in case their National Guard is deployed out of the state, however such an instance has not occurred since The Korean War. Due to these factors these units are rarely utilized and provide little to no assistance to The National Guard.
Do you believe State Defense Forces Should Have Military Police Units or Should That Be Left To The National Guard?
