On April 18, 2024, the Virginia Defense Force (VDF) celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of dedicated service to the Commonwealth of Virginia. This significant milestone was recognized by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin through a formal proclamation, highlighting the VDF’s deep historical roots and its essential role as the all-volunteer reserve component of the Virginia National Guard. Originating from the Virginia Volunteers during World War I and the Virginia Protective Force and Virginia State Guard in World War II, the VDF was formally established on April 18, 1984. Today, it stands alongside the Virginia Army National Guard and the Virginia Air National Guard as a crucial element of the Virginia Department of Military Affairs, tracing its heritage of citizen service back to the early days of the Jamestown Colony in 1607.
The VDF’s rich history is complemented by its wide range of current missions, which are integral to the safety and well-being of Virginia residents. As a support arm for the Virginia National Guard, the VDF is actively involved in Emergency Communications, operating Points of Distribution (PODs) during disasters, and assisting in the Emergency Operations Center during statewide emergencies. Their tasks also include augmenting the National Guard’s Cyber Defense Team, showcasing the adaptability and breadth of their capabilities. This multifaceted approach not only underscores the VDF’s commitment to supporting the Virginia National Guard but also emphasizes their ongoing dedication to serving the communities of the Commonwealth during times of need.
Congrats to the Virginia Defense Force on 40 years of serving their National Guard, State and Country!
